Karen Read's Alibi(s)
Let's analyze several of Karen's media statements that she's made regarding the last time she saw John O'Keefe alive.
Shhh...
(*insert my whispering voice*)
If you listen reeeeally closely, you might hear the sound of every single attorney across the country cringing as they learn that Karen Read’s lawyers allowed her to go on a wild, media tour over the past two years.
The consequences of Karen’s need to control a public narrative while boasting that the televised statements are her “testimony” might be at her own legal peril as the Commonwealth has gained access to many of these inconsistent declarations.
There are different parts of her accounts that I want to discuss, but for time’s sake, I chose to narrow in on Karen’s alibi story of when she *allegedly* dropped John off at the Albert home.
It’s a pivotal moment in the case, and yet some curious statements and inconsistencies are found when comparing what she told different media outlets, including:
Investigative Discovery
20/20
Dateline
Quick summary rehash: As we know, a group had gathered at the Waterfall Bar & Grill to socialize, and once it got late, Nicole Albert made a general invitation to anyone there that they were welcome to come back to their house to celebrate their young adult son’s birthday at midnight. Nicole testified that she’s unsure if Karen and John heard the invitation when she mentioned it to the group before leaving. However, Nicole’s sister, Jen McCabe, testified that she extended the invitation to John and Karen. Jen gave John directions to the home, and she had arrived there before Karen and John.
Okay, let’s start with the Investigative Discovery Interview excerpt…
Karen says she doesn’t see any familiar looking cars.
What car would be familiar to her if she doesn’t really know these people like she claims? The only car she may have recognized would be Jen and Matt McCabe’s because they hung out frequently due to the kids’ sports games. Karen had even been to the McCabe’s home.
So if Karen was looking for a vehicle to recognize, the McCabe’s vehicle would potentially be the only one she would likely recognize. But it was there, parked in the driveway.
Karen does not mention the vehicle with multiple people in it (including Ryan Nagel) that was pulling up to the house at the SAME exact time as her and John.
Karen says as she pulled up that it “didn’t look like any soiree was going on”. She says it “didn’t look inviting” and it was “dark out”.
Yet, we know the driveway had multiple cars, and a vehicle was pulling up at the same time as her. The lights were on inside the downstairs, and at one point a partygoer exited the house to speak with the 3 people in the car behind Karen.
What other sign did Karen need in order to believe that the house they were invited to by the friends they were just with 20 minutes earlier is, indeed, having a social gathering?
Karen says she called John within 2-3 minutes of him entering the house and he didn’t respond. She waited 10 more minutes and then drove away. The problem for Karen is that her call records show this never happened.
Karen never attempted to call John until 12:33:35 AM, which is about 3 minutes *before* her wifi connects back at John’s house. This means that she drove away from the Albert property before calling John.
The first voicemail she leaves is at 12:37 AM, when she screams that she “fucking hates” John.
Now, moving on to the 20/20 Interview…
In this narrative, Karen never mentions attempting to call John while waiting out front of the Albert property.
Despite that the 20/20 interview aired before the ID interview, it was actually filmed after the first trial, so this might explain the pivotal and subtle change in her storyline.
In the earlier interviews, Karen likely wasn’t anticipating that Trooper Guarino discovered digital evidence that her cellphone connected to John’s home wifi at 12:36 AM, thus discrediting her claims that she was out front of the Albert house when calling John. Without the specific detail of when she connected to the WiFi, it left a wider range of time for Karen to suggest she was waiting outside the Albert property for John while calling him. The police were unable to access Karen’s gps data because it had been turned off.
Karen now suggesting that she never called him while waiting outside makes her already nonsensical story, more absurd. She is basically saying that despite being John’s ride home, she watches him walk into a house in the middle of the night, and then ditches him there despite the incoming blizzard storm. And then she wakes up hours later and is convinced he is dead on the side of the road somewhere.
“I would have expected him to be either walking back to me or calling me, that ‘yeah, we're here’”.
This phrase caught my eye because the verbiage “would have” means hypothetically. When recalling a memory, you don’t recall hypotheticals as a fact. She either did expect him to walk back, or she didn’t. Unless, of course, she’s inventing a narrative and accidentally slipped up.
Lastly, let’s look at the Dateline interview…
This one is a back and forth conversation between the reporter and Karen, so it’s a bit longer than the other ones.
In this earlier interview, we see the (now debunked) narrative I mentioned above of her calling John while waiting outside of the Albert house.
One thing that stands out to me is if they felt unwelcome at all, then why did John open the door without knocking or ringing the doorbell? Karen doesn’t mention seeing anyone opening the door from the inside. John allegedly put his hand on the doorknob and began crossing the threshold. This seems to show a sign that the home was open and welcoming for guests. Why was Karen not convinced?
Karen says there was maybe one or two cars on the driveway. This is proven false during the trial testimony. Multiple cars were there, so why would she lessen the number in her statement? Is she attempting to frame her story that the house didn’t look like there was a “soiree” so she minimizes the amount of vehicles there?
COMING UP: Jury Selection is scheduled to start next week!
Remember to keep John O’keefe’s family and friends in your prayers.❤️
